For this, he founded Panzi Hospital and, subsequently, a secure structure to offer refuge to patients and their children. In 2012, after holding a courageous speech to condemn the impunity of those responsible for the crimes before the UN General Assembly, four armed men attacked his home, keeping his daughters hostage. He thus left his country to go into exile in Europe. In 2013, Mukwege decided to return to Congo, despite ongoing threats stating: "In no way is my life worth more than the lives of thousands of women. So I made the decision to return."
